The Indian Penal Code, 1860 (IPC) was replaced by the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS) with effect from 1 July 2024. The BNS consolidates 511 IPC sections into 358 sections by merging related provisions, deleting obsolete offences, and introducing 20 new provisions addressing organised crime, terrorism, snatching, and sexual offences by deceit. All offences committed before 1 July 2024 continue to be governed by the IPC; offences committed on or after that date fall under the BNS.
